CURRICULUM

ODC has developed a rigorous and culturally-relevant curriculum for children and young adults. The curriculum is internationally-based and focused on the four English macro skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing with the course content built around values, culture and ethics, recognizing the need for holistic enrichment to help youth shape their lives.

Purpose of Focusing on the Four Macro Skills

  • Writing: To enable students to use correct grammar and a range of vocabulary to write responses appropriately, organize ideas, draw conclusions and write opinions.

  • Listening: To enable students to listen to conversations, understand ideas shared, follow the narrative and draw conclusions on them.

  • Speaking: To enable students to communicate their ideas to others effectively and fluently.

FOUNDATION PROGRAM

This program is the foundation of the ODC English Curriculum, designed for the youngest learners at the earliest stages of English acquisition. It utilizes the "Oxford Phonics World" textbook series, which is structured into 5 progressive levels (1-5). This program is carefully crafted to align with the Pre-A1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), ensuring a standardized approach to early language education. The focus of this program is on developing basic phonics and literacy skills, providing children with a strong foundation in English sound-letter relationships and early reading abilities. This initial stage sets the groundwork for future language learning and prepares young students for more advanced English studies.

YOUNG LEARNER PROGRAM

Building upon the Foundation Program, the Young Learners Program takes students to the next level of English proficiency. This program employs the "Family and Friends" textbook series, which is divided into 6 comprehensive levels (1-6). It is designed to bridge the gap between Pre-A1 and A2 levels of the CEFR, representing a significant advancement in language skills. Typically spanning years 3-8 of the overall curriculum, this program caters to growing children and pre-teens, offering age-appropriate content and learning strategies. The "Family and Friends" series likely incorporates themes and activities that resonate with this age group, making language learning engaging and relevant to their daily lives while steadily building their English competence.

ADULT PROGRAM

The Adult Program marks the transition to more advanced and comprehensive English learning, suitable for older teens and adults. It utilizes the widely recognized "English File" textbook series, which offers 6 distinct levels: Beginner, Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate, and Advanced. This program covers a broad spectrum of CEFR levels, from A1 to C1, indicating a significant depth and breadth of language instruction. Spanning approximately years 6-10 of the overall curriculum, it provides learners with extensive exposure to English in various contexts. The "English File" series is known for its balanced approach to language skills, likely offering comprehensive development in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, along with in-depth grammar and vocabulary instruction suitable for adult learners.

IELTS Preparation

Upon completion of the Upper Intermediate course, students will sit for an internally set exam, equivalent to the IELTS. Outstanding students will be selected to undertake the IELTS Preparation course and ultimately sit for the external IELTS exam.
